FOLK ARTS & CULTURE:   Traditional Music and Dance

Music by New York State County

Westchester County

OVERVIEW: Westchester County is both suburban and urban. Until recently, many immigrants moved here from New York City, but in the past quarter century, Westchester has seen a dramatic increase in direct immigration to its own cities. Long the home to Irish and Italian musicians, it was a major destination of the great migration of African Americans during the twentieth Century, and now is home to Latin Americans from Mexico to Uruguay. Because of high living costs and mobility, many of its most accomplished traditional artists are recent immigrants.
