[Charles Farrar] Browne adopted the persona of an illiterate old showman, Artemus Ward, the curator and exhibitor of a wax museum and menagerie. Aware of various American eccentrics such as spiritualists, assorted utopians, and Fenians, and brought into contact with such crusades as the temperance movement, abolition, secessionism, and women’s rights, the old showman felt constrained to scratch off letters to newspapers expressing his ardent patriotism in the face of rapid metamorphosis of American traditions and social structures. His simplistic vision and interpretation of life often drew upon folk elements rooted deeply in the national character. (from “ ‘Brandy and Water’: American Folk Types in the Work of Artemus Ward” by Geoffrey A. Grimes)
