"To understand the folklore movement in New York State one must observe carefully this matter of the public Thompson sought to reach, because if the school of folklorists in New York has had one quality in common, it has been the desire to bring back to the people themselves an awareness of their own traditions. In general we have cared remarkably little what the rest of the folklore fraternity thought about this, and some of them were shocked, as though we were giving away to the great unwashed the secret password of the lodge. We always figured that folklore had come from the great unwashed and that it ought to be returned to them." (from "HWT:NYSCT:BBB:NYFS" by Louis C. Jones)
