SPRING/SUMMER 1999 NEWSLETTER MAIN PAGE

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Comings and Goings

Spring is a time for new beginnings and it is with anticipation that I once again enter the service of the New York Folklore Society, albeit in a slightly different role from my previous roles as board officer or member. New York Folklore Society is a healthy and well-respected organization, which has grown tremendously in the last ten years under former director John Suter’s vision and leadership. The baton has been passed to me, and I officially began as the new executive director in early March. I am pleased to be in the position to nurture the society into the next millennium as the New York Folklore Society has, in many ways, nourished me in my professional development. I look forward to meeting many of you, our members, in the weeks and years to come.

Fall Conference: The Summer Worlds of Saratoga Springs, September 16-18, 1999

This year’s fall conference will explore the resort life of Saratoga Springs. Selected as the 1997 Great American Place by American Heritage editors, the city offers a wealth of folklife experiences. We hope you join us as we experience the sporting life, spa culture, and wonderful cuisine of this city with lively panel discussions and roundtables, a guided folklife walking tour, photography exhibits, meals, film, and music. Come take a bath and massage at the famous Lincoln Baths; learn about the world of horse racing from those who frequent the backstretch; and attend a night at Caffé Lena, one of America’s premier folk music clubs. Early registration is encouraged as Saratoga has an active life of its own. Registration materials are enclosed in this newsletter.

NEA Awards Expansion Grant to the New York Folklore Society

The New York Folklore Society launches a new initiative with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. "Expanding Service to an Expanding Field" will provide a vehicle for the New York Folklore Society to better and more efficiently provide assistance to organizations who have, or are developing, folk arts programs. This initiative will supplement and complement our existing Mentoring and Technical Assistance Program. With NEA’s generous support, New York Folklore Society will be able to consolidate our existing services and develop several new service offerings, building on successful and replicable services we have tested in the past.
