PROGRAMS & SERVICES | NY FIELD TRIPS | FORUMS | MENTORING | ARCHIVES | ADVOCACY | SEARCH The New York Folklore Society is an official Partner of the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress and American Folklife Center. Joining with institutions of higher learning, veterans groups and historical agencies through the country as well as the AARP, the projects founding private sponsor, NYFS seeks to publicize this important national project through community outreach and training workshops for others involved in collecting oral histories. The NYFS staff has conducted such workshops and provided technical assistance to central New York schools and historical societies that wish to initiate a project. Our Mentoring and Professional Development Program has provided assistance so that projects can continue beyond the initial startup work supported by the Library of Congress. If you would like more information on the project or want to host a workshop, please e-mail us or phone us at 518/346-7008.The Veterans History Project was created by an act of Congress on October 27, 2000, in recognition of the countrys veterans of World War I, World War II, and the Korean, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf Wars. The mission of the project is "to collect the memories, accounts, and documents of war veterans" and "to preserve these stories of experience and service for future generations." By coordinating and expanding a national repository of veterans oral histories, writings, photographs, and home movies, the Library of Congress will be able to provide a valuable resource for historians, educators, students, family members, and American citizens everywhere. This important collection will document the experience and collective memories of American men and women who served both on the war front and the home front, bringing history home to the people who lived it, rather than being presented from the perspective of generals or politicians, as found in many written histories. Recordings and personal documents collected will become part of the Library of Congress/American Folklife Center National Veterans History Collection, to be housed at the Library or at partner institutions such as military museums or libraries. The Library of Congress will create a comprehensive, searchable catalog of all materials and will present selections on-line at their website. The American Folklife Center will develop a National Registry of all who are interviewed as part of this project, to be presented on the Library of Congresss website.
