NYFS Announces Hungarian Trilogy— a series of Hungarian dance and music events presented statewide in spring 2011.

The series, free and open to the public and supported in part by the New York State Council on the Arts, highlights both traditional and popular music and dance forms brought to New York State by Hungarian immigrant communities over the last century. Featured performers include music and dance groups that are keeping these traditions alive in and around New York State, through connections with the vibrant folk revival tradition in Hungary, and in diasporic Hungarian communities in the Northeastern U.S.

Heveder Folk Ensemble

The Heveder Folk Ensemble is becoming one of Europe’s most popular Hungarian folk music ensembles. They are from the Hungarian populated city of Sepsiszentgyörgy, which is located in the eastern part of Transylvania (present-day Romania). The members of the band are dedicated to learning authentic folk music from the old masters living in remote villages, mostly Gypsy (Roma) musicians preserving traditional village music through the centuries. They have performed in Transylvania with several folk ensembles and at many festivals, and they tour in Hungary and Western Europe often. This summer marks their debut tour in North America.

This event is the second in the New York Folklore Society’s “Hungarian Trilogy,” a statewide series of Hungarian music and dance events. Accompanying each concert in the series is an exhibition planning meeting with members of New York State’s various Hungarian communities. For more information, contact Lisa Overholser at 518-346-7008, or lisa@nyfolklore.org

This program is made possible in part with the support of the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
