HISTORY—Oral and Otherwise: Check out these links for a sampling of Long Island’s history.


MARITIME-RELATED TRADITIONS: Check out these links for information on the region’s maritime-related folklife traditions, including fishing, surfing, and more:

  • The Stonington Fishing Oral History Project—Mystic Seaport has preserved a spoken and visual record of the fishermen of Stonington Borough, Connecticut.
  • Surf Long Island by Richard Quinn has great surfing photos and links to daily surf reports from different parts of Long Island.
  • New Jersey FishNet is a commercial fisherman's comprehensive site with descriptions of current technology, profiles of fishermen, links to government and academic sites involved in fisheries research, articles and book reviews, photos.


MUSIC TRADITIONS: Check out these links for information about music on Long Island.

  • The Long Island Traditional Music Association supports traditional music and sponsors events on Long Island.
  • The Folk Music Society of Huntington presents artists in concert, fosters membership participation in community programs related to the arts, and encourages the sharing of musical expertise and knowledge of folklore.
  • Shanties and sea songs includes lyrics, bibliography and musical links. Much loved by modern sailors and folk musicians, they are rarely used as work songs today.
