NYFS CONFERENCE 1998

PROGRAM PHOTO ESSAY EXPLORE L.I.

At the 1998 fall conference, our participants were invited to:

Explore the rich and diverse maritime traditions of Long Island, from commerical and recreational fishing to bay houses, from model boat builders to surfers.

Join fellow artists, folklorists, teachers, local historians, and others interested in Long Island culture and history for two days of stimulating presentations and discussions, folklife demonstrations, and fine home-cooked meals prepared and hosted by community groups.

Conference sessions of the New York Folklore Society featuring Long Island’s baymen and bayhouses, the cultural traditions of people who work on the water, and maritime folklife.

Check out the photo essay about this conference. To find out more about Long Island and its folklore, check out Explore Long Island with links to books, music, histories, and organizations.

The New York Folklore Society’s programs are made possible in part with public funds from the Folk Arts Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. NYSCA logo
