It was the location of the first organized Grange in the United States, an organization made by and for the agricultural community. Religious movements such as Spiritualism got its start in Western New York, and the Chatauqua Institution has had a lasting effect on American politics, literature, arts, and language. The New York Folklore Society dedicated its 2001 conference to the spirit of innovation on the Niagara Frontier. Conference attendees enjoyed:
