Denise Jock

Denise Jock grew up around baskets. Her mother, Sarah Thompson, was a talented fancy basketmaker from Akwesasne. She specializes in miniature baskets of 2 inches in diameter. Using a very tiny basket mold, Denise weaves her delicately prepared ash splints into small strawberries and pineapples. Denise like to use ash that is very white because it “takes the dye better” which gives her baskets beautiful color. Growing up at Akwesasne, her mother also taught her how to pick, prepare and braid sweetgrass.

Denise Jock’s baskets are available for purchase through the on-line gallery shop of the New York Folklore Society: New York Traditions.

The gallery is made possible with the generous support of the
William Gundry Broughton Charitable Foundation.
