NEW YORK TRADITIONS: The Gallery of New York Folk Art

Xrystya Szyjka

Xrystya Szyjka demonstrated the traditional art of pysanky in an ongoing demonstration at the Gallery of New York Traditions. Pysanky is the ancient art of egg decoration using the wax resist method. This beautiful and exacting art is perpetuated in Ukraine and other parts of Eastern Europe, as well as in America’s many Eastern European neighborhoods. While it has pre-Christian roots, the tradition has become associated with Christianity and the celebration of the Easter season.

Xrystya Szyjka grew up in Amsterdam where she and her family members activity participated in the perpetuation of this artform. Currently, she is a teacher of English as a Second Language. Ms. Szyjka is known not only for her excellence as an artist, but also for her expertise as a presenter and workshop leader.
