North Country Christmas Stan Ransom and Marne OShae
The "North Country" is a region which includes northeastern New York State, Lake Champlain Basin, and Vermont. The songs and tunes on this recording reflect the interest and history of the region. Many are variations of traditional Christmas songs. Stan Ransom, the "Connecticut Peddler" took his stage name from the itinerant peddlers from Connecticut who traveled about dispensing goods and notions in the 19th century. He plays a 12-string Alvarez guitar, 1926 Model A mandolin, autoharp and dulcimer. Marne OShae plays a 6-string guitar. ©1994.

Sweetwater Passage The Barefoot Boys
The inland waterways of the Hudson Valley region were once the “super highways” of their time. In their ports and along their piers, “canawlers” and whalemen mingled with lumberjacks and landlubbers, who were mixed among sloop captains and steamboat crews. Their singing and playing could be heard down by the wharves, in the taverns and inns nearby, and even back in their homes. New songs and tunes were learned from the sailors of docked clippers, schooners, and whaleboats from other parts of the world. The Barefoot Boys: Rich Bala (vocals, guitar); Rick Hill (vocals, bass, guitar, bowed psaltery); and Tom White (vocals, banjos, bones, concertina, fiddle, mandolin, pennywhistle, and hammered dulcimer) bring to life some of the music from those harbors.

Une Veillée Chez La Famille Ouimet
“Bernard and Normand Ouimet, along with their nephews Marc and Michael have recorded 15 traditional songs from their family’s repertoire. They are proof that the oral tradition has survived in many Franco-American families. Certain songs such as Vive la Compagnie and La Destinée la rose au bois show the influence of printed collections such as those of La Bonne Chanson. Others, for example, Le Curé de Terrebonne, Le Pénitent et l’ivrogne, Papillon, tu es volage and La Chanson remplie de mensonges, are examples of a French-Canadian heritage which has been preserved in all of its vitality up to this day....”—Donald Deschênes, Centre franco-ontarien de folklore, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

Dan writes, “The air in the mountains is refreshing—not just physically but mentally and spiritually as well. Open up and you’ll find it” And you’ll find 19 songs, original and traditional, that will take you there, including the title song, “Mis’ Cole,” “Red Bandana,” “My Old Brown Coat and Me,” “Geese Over St. Regis,” and others.

Driftage Andrew & Noah VanNorstrand
“The original melodies on this recording are primarily influenced by the traditional fiddling styles of Ireland, Scandinavia and Appalachia. These three very different, yet related, genres are each integral to how we play, compose and approach music in general. However, when it comes to arrangements, we’ve incorporated a host of other influences including elements of jazz, rock and even classical music. The West African djembe and Australian didgeridoo form the backbone of a world-beat percussion ensemble that adds a final level of eclecticism to this project. Yet through it all, one can always hear the remnants of an Irish reel, the drone of Swedish harmonies, or the driving beat of an Appalachian breakdown. This is Driftage – music that has traveled across the globe, carried by the universal currents of rhythm and energy. Enjoy!”—Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand, December 2003

Treasures from the Attic The Cleveland Family Ballads and Songs in the Adirondacks
Colleen Cleveland and her father James Cleveland are joined by musicians George Ward, Frank Orsini, Curt and Becky Cleveland in this sampler of the music collected by Colleen’s grandmother, Sara Cleveland — a nationally famous ballad singer of her generation.
Descendants of Scottish and Irish settlers to their area, the family’s music and stories from the old country included ancient ballads or story-songs. Sara Cleveland wrote down all her family songs, beginning in the 1920s — these are the treasures in the Cleveland family attic tucked away after Sara’s death in 1987. The Clevelands revive 14 of the tunes on this CD, including “An Honest Irish Lad,” “Three Men Went A-Hunting,” “In Bonnie Scotland,” and “Nobleman’s Wedding.”

All Our Brave Tars George Ward
British and American Songs from the Age of Fighting Sail, as performed by George Ward. As celebrated in the novels of Marryat, Forester, OBrian, and many more, this was the era of the U.S.S. Constitution and Constellation and the HMS Victory. The songs fall in several distinct categories, including patriotic (or propaganda) ballads to celebrate victory and lament defeat, such as "The Gallant Yankee Ship" and "Battle of the Shannon and Chesapeake." Also, literary songs of naval life composed by novelists to lend color or further a storyline, as in "The Port Admiral" by Marryat. Wardroom and prison poetry, and ballads passed through oral tradition are captured here. "The Flash Frigate" may have been the composition of a lower-deck poet; "Heres the Tender Coming" suggests an oral composition also. Holmess "Old Ironsides" is a known case of poetry set to music.

Oh! That Low Bridge! Songs of the Erie Canal George Ward
As George Ward wrote, "The building of the Erie Canal, through the wilderness of central New York in the years following the War of 1812, worked a transmutation on that wilderness, on the state itself, and on the course of United States history...Its opening in 1825 inspired a number of odes, marches, art songs and recitations. These were formal compositions, a high-culture celebration...At the same time, the canal spawned a subculture of toil...of human labor." The work of the boaters, the engineers, the diggers and others inspired the songs that tell the American legend of the Erie Canal. George Ward sings the songs, plays concertina, five-string banjo, six and twelve-string guitars and bass guitar.

Vic Kibler: Adirondack Fiddler Outstanding Folk Recording (American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress) ©1992, Sampler Records, Ltd.
With Paul Kibler (piano), Paul Van Arsdale (dulcimer) and George Ward (guitar). Vic Kibler learned to play the fiddle from his great-uncle Lewis Nichols (1886-1963) and his uncle Maurice Fountain (1904-1970) when he was 15 and remembers his grandfather William Fountain (1853-1930) as "one of the greatest Adirondack fiddlers of all time." The Nichols and Fountain families have lived in Hamilton County, NY since the early 19th century. Making music was important to family and community gatherings. Vic kept a promise to his mother to never play dances, instead performing at regional and statewide festivals and acting as a judge of fiddle contests in Vermont and NY. The 31 jigs and reels are a small, but representative sampling of the more than 400 tunes that he knows.
