	North Country Christmas Stan Ransom and Marne O’Shae The "North Country" is a region which includes northeastern New York State, Lake Champlain Basin, and Vermont. The songs and tunes on this recording reflect the interest and history of the region. Many are variations of traditional Christmas songs. Stan Ransom, the "Connecticut Peddler" took his stage name from the itinerant peddlers from Connecticut who traveled about dispensing goods and notions in the 19th century. 	Kontiwennenhá:wi Carriers of the Words This women’s group originated as the Women’s Society from Ahkwesahsne. A singing society is charged with the responsibility of giving assistance and support to those in the community who have suffered a loss of some sort. The majority of the songs are written in the Mohawk Language. 	Sweetwater Passage The Barefoot Boys The inland waterways of the Hudson Valley region were once the “super highways” of their time. In their ports and along their piers, “canawlers” and whalemen mingled with lumberjacks and landlubbers, who were mixed among sloop captains and steamboat crews. Their singing and playing could be heard down by the wharves, in the taverns and inns nearby, and even back in their homes. New songs and tunes were learned from the sailors of docked clippers, schooners, and whaleboats from other parts of the world. 	Treasures from the Attic The Cleveland Family Ballads and Songs in the Adirondacks Colleen Cleveland and her father James Cleveland are joined by musicians George Ward, Frank Orsini, Curt and Becky Cleveland in this sampler of the music collected by Colleen’s grandmother, Sara Cleveland — a nationally famous ballad singer of her generation. Descendants of Scottish and Irish settlers to their area, the family’s music and stories from the old country included ancient ballads or story-songs. Sara Cleveland wrote down all her family songs, beginning in the 1920s — these are the treasures in the Cleveland family attic tucked away after Sara’s death in 1987. 	Millhand Maggie Told by The Story Walker Kathleen Gill Millhand Maggie is Margaret Sheridan Harrigan, grandmother of Kathleen Gill. Kathleen’s grandmother grew up in Cohoes just before the turn of the 20th century. The mills of Cohoes, NY were places of employment for her family. 	All Our Brave Tars George Ward British and American Songs from the Age of Fighting Sail, as performed by George Ward. As celebrated in the novels of Marryat, Forester, O’Brian, and many more, this was the era of the U.S.S. Constitution and Constellation and the HMS Victory. The songs fall in several distinct categories, including patriotic (or propaganda) ballads to celebrate victory and lament defeat, such as "The Gallant Yankee Ship" and "Battle of the Shannon and Chesapeake." Also, literary songs of naval life composed by novelists to lend color or further a storyline, as in "The Port Admiral" by Marryat. Wardroom and prison poetry, and ballads passed through oral tradition are captured here. "The Flash Frigate" may have been the composition of a lower-deck poet; "Here’s the Tender Coming" suggests an oral composition also. Holmes’s "Old Ironsides" is a known case of poetry set to music. Songs of the Erie Canal George Ward As George Ward wrote, "The building of the Erie Canal, through the wilderness of central New York in the years following the War of 1812, worked a transmutation on that wilderness, on the state itself, and on the course of United States history...Its opening in 1825 inspired a number of odes, marches, art songs and recitations. These were formal compositions, a high-culture celebration...At the same time, the canal spawned a subculture of toil...of human labor." The work of the boaters, the engineers, the diggers and others inspired the songs that tell the American legend of the Erie Canal. 	Vic Kibler: Adirondack Fiddler Outstanding Folk Recording (American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress) ©1992, Sampler Records, Ltd. With Paul Kibler (piano), Paul Van Arsdale (dulcimer) and George Ward (guitar). Vic Kibler learned to play the fiddle from his great-uncle Lewis Nichols (1886-1963) and his uncle Maurice Fountain (1904-1970) when he was 15 and remembers his grandfather William Fountain (1853-1930) as "one of the greatest Adirondack fiddlers of all time." The Nichols and Fountain families have lived in Hamilton County, NY since the early 19th century. Making music was important to family and community gatherings. Vic kept a promise to his mother to never play dances, instead performing at regional and statewide festivals and acting as a judge of fiddle contests in Vermont and NY.
