Grant Van Loan’s interest in bird decoys stems from his boyhood in Coxsakie, Green County, where he assisted his father in making decoys for hunting. Decoys were then of simple construction, but over the years have become more of a decorative art form. Grant experiments with the use of weathered barn boards and timbers, incorporating patterns in wood to suggest the texturing of feathers.
Ellen McHale

Grant Van Loan’s duck decoys as well as his carved fish are available for purchase through the on-line gallery shop of the New York Folklore Society: New York Traditions.

The gallery is made possible with the generous support of the
William Gundry Broughton Charitable Foundation
